The Outback town of White Cliffs is renowned for its dazzling locally mined opals. Opals were discovered at White Cliffs in the late 1800’s and brought an influx of miners to the small town. The opals quickly became internationally popular with the rare ‘pineapple’ crystals being unique to White Cliffs.
The original miners found the above ground conditions so harsh that much of the town has been built underground. You can now visit the cool underground dwellings known as ‘dugouts’ or stay in an underground motel.
East of White Cliffs the Paroo-Darling National Park has vibrant wetland wildlife and significant indigenous sites, and includes the Paroo Overflow, an area of outstanding natural beauty and conservation value.
The Mutawintji National Park is just west of White Cliffs, with the opportunity bushwalk through the breathtaking wilderness, an area rich in Aboriginal history.
