Important Event Information

One night, many ways to celebrate this New Year’s Eve! Hundreds of thousands of people will line the harbour foreshore and various vantage points for the 9pm and midnight New Year’s Eve fireworks. Get ready to ring in the new year with our top tips to plan a safe, enjoyable and stress-free New Year’s Eve.

With thousands of extra transport services running throughout the night, don’t get caught in traffic this New Year’s Eve, leave the car at home and catch public transport instead.

Significant road closures and street parking restrictions will be in place across the city, North Sydney and various local council areas. For details of road closures see below or visit livetraffic.com. For information on the TfNSW Cahill Expressway event, visit the Transport for NSW website.

Top tips to plan your night:

  • Check vantage point details and capacity updates: Most NYE vantage points are free and non-ticketed this year. Popular vantage points are expected to fill early on the day. Check the official SydNYE website before leaving home for the latest updates. Make sure to plan ahead and know what you can and can’t bring into the vantage point site.
  • Be aware of changes to public transport and walking routes: Transport services will be affected by road closures, and the way you arrive will be different to the way you leave. Major roads will close progressively from mid-afternoon, and direct access to the harbour by public transport will be limited. From mid-afternoon there'll be no transport directly to Circular Quay so be prepared to walk further than usual from nearby transport hubs. After midnight, pedestrian diversions will be in place to safely manage crowds accessing transport hubs to get home. Be patient and follow directions of staff on site, see the maps below to find your way.
  • Plan your trip before leaving home: use the Trip Planner or a real-time transport app like the Opal Travel App to plan your trip before heading out, and get real-time updates. After the midnight fireworks, expect big crowds at transport hubs, consider staying out until after 1am to avoid the peak crowds. Transport services will be running all through the night.
  • Know your transport ticketing options: Travel on public transport is not free on NYE. You’ll need to use an Opal card or contactless debit/credit card or mobile device to tap on and off transport services wherever Opal is accepted. If you’re using your Opal card remember to top it up in advance either online via the Opal Travel app or at one of the many Opal retailers as queues at top up machines will be long on the night. Plan ahead and ensure everyone has enough balance on their Opal card to cover their fare before boarding services.

Road closure information

  • If you're planning to drive on New Year's Eve to the city or around the harbour foreshore in a local council area be aware that roads will be closed across many parts of the city. Plan ahead and check livetraffic.com before you get in the car, and see our road closure maps below.
  • In the Sydney CBD, some roads start closing from as early as 4am with roads in Circular Quay and The Rocks closed by 2pm, followed by major closures in the city centre and Pyrmont by 7pm.  The city will be locked down by 11pm ahead of the midnight fireworks.
  • In North Sydney, Milsons Point and Kirribilli roads start closing from 5pm, with some early morning local road closures around vantage points.
  • The Cahill Expressway southbound lanes 7 and 8 on the Harbour Bridge and Circular Quay Overpass will close from 6am on NYE. The Sydney Harbour Bridge will be completely closed in both directions from 11pm ahead of the midnight fireworks. The Anzac Bridge citybound lanes will close from 8.30pm to 9.30pm and again from 11pm to 1.30am for both firework displays.

After the 9pm and midnight fireworks, getting back to transport hubs to continue your trip home will be different to the way you arrive. Plenty of additional public transport services will be running throughout the day and into the early hours of New Year’s Day.
