Lower public transport fares for more veterans
Eligible veterans with a disability, widows and dependent children who lost a parent will now pay less for public transport throughout NSW.
From Tuesday 30 June, all NSW residents that hold a Veteran Gold Card or Gold Health Card issued by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) will be able to apply for a Gold Opal card and travel on senior/pensioner fares in the Opal network.
DVA gold card holders will also be able to travel on concession fares in rural and regional NSW including the $2.50 Regional Excursion Daily (RED) bus tickets and the $2.50 Country Pensioner Excursion tickets for NSW TrainLink Regional.
They can take advantage of senior/pensioner fares as low as 80 cents for bus and light rail (from 6 July on the Opal network) and rural and regional bus fares starting at $1.20.
Key benefits include:
- A Gold Opal card to travel on the Opal network for no more than $2.50 per day.
- Rural and regional concession fares including the $2.50 Regional Excursion Daily (RED) bus tickets and the $2.50 Country Pensioner Excursion tickets for NSW TrainLink Regional.
DVA gold card holders include veterans who have a disability, widows or widowers who have lost a partner in peacetime service or dependent children who lost a parent in similar circumstances.
The new look Veteran Gold Card is being issued by the DVA to eligible recipients in a phased rollout during 2020. All other benefits and entitlements will remain unchanged. The card will replace all existing DVA gold health cards and is being sent to card holders before their health card expires.
If you are eligible, you will need to carry your DVA Veteran Gold Card or DVA Gold Health Card as proof of entitlement.
With the current COVID-19 health warnings, seniors and vulnerable members of the community are advised to adhere to NSW Health advice. Please don’t leave home unless it’s absolutely necessary.
DVA gold card holders will be able to apply for a Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card via Transport Concession application form or by calling 131 500 from Tuesday 30 June.
