Consider walking or cycling to get around
As restrictions ease and more people return to work, now is a great time to consider walking or cycling to travel if you can, and avoid public transport during peak hours.
Cycling and walking helps reduce vehicle traffic on our roads and frees up space on public transport, which will help maintain physical distancing on public transport.
Transport for NSW is working with councils to establish pop-up cycleways and enhance access for pedestrians to keep people safe while moving around. This includes lower speed limits for drivers to provide safer environments for pedestrians.
Six new cycleways in Sydney
Developed in collaboration with City of Sydney Council, six new cycleways will be rolled out to the west, east and south of the CBD.
The six cycleways will be on:
- Bridge Road / Pyrmont Bridge Road, Pyrmont
- Pitt St North in Sydney CBD
- Moore Park Road in Paddington / Moore Park
- Dunning Avenue, Rosebery
- Sydney Park Road, Erskineville / Alexandria
- Henderson Road, Eveleigh.
The NSW Government and City of Sydney Council are also considering plans to deliver temporary cycleways on Oxford St in Paddington/Darlinghurst, King St, College St and Castlereagh St in the CBD, and King St in Newtown.
Lower speed limit zones
New 40km/hr zones will be piloted in Camperdown, Ultimo and on Bridge Road between Annandale and Pyrmont, in conjunction with the pop up cycleways, to provide safe route options for commuters and pedestrians.
Getting active
Another bonus of walking and cycling is you can meet the minimum requirement for 30 minutes daily physical activity, while taking pressure off our transport system. Consider riding with your kids to school, or walking to your local shops or as part of your journey to work.
Travelling safely
It’s important we all stick to the physical distancing and road rules and share the road safely.
- For drivers – watch out for pedestrians and bicycle riders, and give at least 1 metre clearance when passing a bike rider (1.5 metres if driving above 60kmh).
- For pedestrians – Remember the 1.5 metre physical distancing rule, look out before you step out and stay on designated footpaths or the nature strip.
- For bike riders – ride 1.5 metres apart, stick to the road rules for bicycle riders, take extra care riding around cars and trucks. If you’re riding on a share path, please give way to pedestrians.
- For parents – children under the age of 16 can ride on the footpath, and any accompanying family members (you must keep left and give way to pedestrians) and always hold the hand of children when crossing the road.
