Important Event Information

Up to 30,000 attendees are expected at the 41st Carols in The Domain Christmas event.

The best way to get to the event is by public transport with trains, buses, ferries and light rail services all within close walking distance of The Domain at Town Hall, QVB, St James, Martin Place and Circular Quay.

Due to trackwork on the T4 line trains will not run between Central and Bondi Junction. Plan ahead, express buses will run. Trackwork on some other lines may also affect your trip including the T2 Inner West Line between Lidcombe and Strathfield, plan ahead using the Trip Planner.

Festivities commence from 1pm so arrive early to secure a spot and enjoy the pre-show entertainment. There are free, non-ticketed, general admission areas available called The Festive Lawn, alternatively you can reserve a space for a fee in the Reserved Lawn premier area.

Remember, you'll need to use an Opal card or contactless payment card/device when travelling on public transport to and from the event. Register your details online at Opal or via the Opal Travel app ahead of time.

Changed traffic conditions and road closures will be in place around The Domain to allow crowds to safely leave the venue, allow extra travel time to continue on foot from the precinct if you are catching rideshare or taxis home from the event.

Opal

You can use an Opal card for all modes of public transport in Sydney and surrounding regions, including metro, trains, buses, ferries and light rail.

Remember to top up your Opal card before you travel to avoid waiting in line at top-up machines. You can top up your card online or at an Opal retailer.

More ways to pay

If you have a contactless-enabled American Express, Mastercard or Visa debit or credit card, or a linked device, you can use it to pay for your travel by tapping on and tapping off at Opal card readers. Available on all public transport, contactless payments are another way to pay on the Opal network. Adult Opal fare pricing applies and you will receive Opal benefits, including daily and weekly fare caps.

Sydney Metro services are high-frequency, driverless trains running between Tallawong Station and Chatswood Station.

Due to planned weekend trackwork buses will replace all Metro North West services between Tallawong and Chatswood on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 December. Change at Epping to connect with train services towards the City.

The closest stations to The Domain are St James  and Town Hall, which are all within short walking distance.

Trackwork

Weekend trackwork is taking place from 2am Saturday 16 December to 2am Monday 18 December  and may affect how you travel to and from the event. Plan ahead using the Trip Planner:

  • T1 Western Line: Limited buses replace trains between Lidcombe and Strathfield. Trains run to and from the City via Bankstown. On Saturday you can catch a direct train between T1 Western Line stations and the City via Bankstown.
  • T2 Inner West & Leppington Line: Limited buses replace trains between Lidcombe and Strathfield. Travel to and from the City via Bankstown or the Airport
  • T3 Bankstown Line: Extra trains run between Lidcombe and the City via Sydenham, to a changed timetable and stopping pattern.
  • T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line: Buses replace trains between Central and Bondi Junction. Trains run to a changed timetable between Cronulla or Waterfall and North Sydney. Change at Town Hall for express buses to Bondi Junction. Trackwork buses do not leave from Martin Place Station. Buses leave from nearby bus stops or you can catch the light rail to Town Hall or Central.
  • T5 Cumberland Line: Extra trains run between Richmond and Leppington.
  • T9 Northern Line: Extra trains run between Rhodes and the City Circle
  • Blue Mountains Line: Trains run between Blue Mountains Line stations and Blacktown only, due to trackwork between Lidcombe and Strathfield. Change at Penrith for express buses to Strathfield.
  • South Coast Line: Buses replace trains between Central and Bondi Junction. Trains run to a changed timetable between South Coast Line stations and Central, platforms 1-12. On Saturday From 7.30am to 11.30am, at Bulli, Woonona, Bellambi and Corrimal, all trains leave from platform 1. From 12pm to 4pm, at Corrimal, Bellambi, Woonona and Bulli, all trains leave from platform 2.
  • Southern Highlands Line: Saturday 16 December from 10am to 4pm, buses replace trains between Campbelltown and Moss Vale.

Plenty of regular route buses run to the City making stops within short walking distance of The Domain.

The closest bus interchanges are at Town Hall QVB and Park Street, Martin Place, St James and Hyde Park. Plan your trip using the Trip Planner.

Services run regularly to Circular Quay and the wharves are within walking distance of The Domain. Sydney Ferries services are very popular on weekends and may reach capacity, so have alternative transport options in mind.

L1 Dulwich Hill Line

L1 Dulwich Hill line light rail services run between Central Grand Concourse and Dulwich Hill from 6am to 11pm daily, and until midnight on Fridays. Use the Trip Planner to plan your trip.

From Central, connect with trains on the City Circle to St James or change for a light rail service on the L2 or L3 Line to QVB or Town Hall to get within walking distance of The Domain.

L2 Randwick and L3 Kingsford Lines

L2 Randwick light rail services run between Circular Quay and Randwick via Central Station (Chalmers Street) and the L3 Kingsford line services run between Circular Quay and Kingsford via Central Station (Chalmers Street). Services run regularly from 5am to 1am daily, plan your trip using the Trip Planner.

The closest stops to The Domain are QVB and Town Hall on the L2 and L3 lines, which are both within walking distance.

Road Closures

Roads within and around The Domain will close for crowd safety before, during and after the event.

  • Art Gallery Road will be closed at Hospital Road from 8pm to 11:30pm. 

After the show, the following roads will close from 9:30pm at the direction of NSW Police:

  • College Street from Park Street to Prince Albert Road
  • Cathedral Street at St Marys Road
  • Hospital Road from Art Gallery Road to Shakespeare Place
  • Macquarie Street from Hunter Street to Prince Albert Road
  • Prince Albert Road from Macquarie Street to Art Gallery Road
  • St Mary’s Road from Prince Albert Road to Sir John Young Crescent
  • St James Road from Elizabeth Street to Macquarie Street

Parking in the area is limited and is expected to reach capacity early. Consider using public transport to get to the event.

If you are catching rideshare or taxis, use the dedicated drop-off location on Hospital Road at Art Gallery Road. 

After the concert, road closures will be in place around The Domain to allow crowds to safely leave the venue from 9:30pm.

Allow extra travel time to continue on foot away from the precinct if you are catching rideshare or taxis home from the event.
