Bikes on buses in the bush trial

Despite strong support from the community, Transport for NSW’s Bikes on Buses in the Bush trial in Wagga Wagga has been put on hold.

The trial was initially announced in April 2021, with plans for bike racks to be fitted onto the front of buses on the 960 bus route allowing users to combine a bike ride with a bus trip.

The trial is now on hold, after concerns were identified in an independent risk assessment carried out in May 2021, which needs further investigation. These concerns include bus stop lengths and vehicle sizes.

This Wagga Wagga trial was initially flagged to explore future transport options for regional NSW and boost access and connectivity between different modes of transport.

Beyond the health benefits of active travel, the integration of bike riding with buses would increase convenience, reduce congestion and greenhouse emissions, and initial research suggested it may appeal to customers not currently using public transport in Wagga Wagga.

Transport for NSW received a positive response from the community through the market re-search survey conducted earlier in 2021. There were over 400 respondents and 100 participants registered to take part in the on-road trial.

Any future Bikes on Buses trial is expected to:

  • improve connections for the community between active and public transport
  • provide connectivity to popular destinations around the city
  • include simple and easy to use bike racks

Issues were raised concerning bus stop lengths and vehicle sizes, needing further investigation before the trial can proceed in Wagga Wagga.

The first “Bikes on Buses in the Bush” trial was set to begin in mid-2021 in Wagga Wagga. The on-road trial was expected to be rolled out on the 960 bus route which travels from Lake Albert in Wagga Wagga’s south, through to the CBD, Estella and Charles Sturt University in the north.
